A new type of cyber fraud
A new type of cyber fraud is targeting Gmail users, tricking them into believing their email storage is full. Kerala Police has issued a warning against this scam, urging users to stay vigilant.
How the Scam Works
Scammers send fraudulent emails claiming that your Gmail storage has reached its limit and that your account will be deactivated unless you take immediate action. These emails appear to be from Google and include a link to "restore" your account.
Clicking on this link redirects users to a fake website controlled by scammers. Once there, users may be tricked into downloading malware that infects their devices or into providing sensitive banking details, leading to financial loss.
Why This Scam Is Dangerous
- Looks Authentic: The email appears to be from Google, making users more likely to trust it.
- Leads to Malware & Data Theft: Clicking the fraudulent link can install malware or steal sensitive information.
- Financial Loss: If users enter banking details, scammers can access their accounts and steal money.
Kerala Police’s Safety Advisory
Kerala Police has urged the public to be cautious and follow these safety measures:
- Verify Storage Status: Check your Gmail storage directly through Google Account settings instead of trusting email notifications.
- Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links: Never click on links in unsolicited emails, especially those claiming urgent action.
- Report Financial Fraud: If you fall victim to a scam, immediately report it by calling 1930, the cybercrime helpline.
Cybercriminals continue to exploit digital users through sophisticated scams. Staying informed and cautious is the best defence against such threats.
